"The event had actually not even started when the rush began," authorities spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said. There could be more deaths taped as officers examine the incident, he stated.

The church canceled the charity event with bags of rice and clothing items still arranged within the facilities.

As the church held a marriage event after the crowd was evacuated, the agony and unhappiness stayed palpable even as friends and families gathered for wedding event images.

Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu expressed his compassion with the victims' households and asked states and pertinent authorities to impose rigorous crowd control steps.

The current stampedes in Nigeria have actually raised questions about security procedures in such events. Several kids were killed on Wednesday today when a local structure arranged a well-attended funfair to disperse present and food to kids in southwestern Oyo state.

After the most current disaster, the authorities in Abuja announced that prior approval should be gotten before such charity drive are arranged.

The existing financial hardship under Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who promised "restored hope" when he was sworn into office in May 2023, is blamed on surging inflation that is at a 28-year high and the federal government ´ s economic policies that have pressed the regional currency to record low against the dollar.

Frustration over the cost-of-living crisis has actually caused mass protests in current months. In August, at least 20 people were shot dead and numerous others were jailed at protests requiring much better chances and tasks for youths.
